FictionBooks

About the project

Short stories from the edge of the map, written by people and their machines.

FictionBooks is a small reading room for amateur science fiction and fan fiction. It grew out of a Facebook writing group in 2024, where members swapped prompts, half-finished drafts and the occasional strange thing a language model had suggested at two in the morning.

Every story here starts with a human idea. Authors use AI tools the way earlier generations used a thesaurus, a typewriter or a patient friend: to draft scenes, test dialogue, translate, or argue about an ending. Then a person rewrites, cuts and takes responsibility for the result. Each piece is labeled with how much help it had.

We publish a few stories a month: space opera, first contact, quiet near-future pieces and fan fiction set in worlds we love. Most of the archive, workshop threads and drafts in progress are open to members only.

How a story gets here

  1. PromptA member posts an idea in the weekly prompt thread. Fan fiction pitches name the source world.
  2. DraftThe author writes, alone or with an AI model, and labels the level of assistance honestly.
  3. WorkshopTwo members read and comment. The author revises. Raw model output is never published.
  4. PublishEditors pick a few stories a month for the front page. Everything else stays in the members' archive.
